Department of Political Science
Political science is the art and science of governance. It is an important basis for humanistic studies, and has been a concern of intellectuals since the times of Aristotle. Studying political science can prepare one for various careers that require highly developed skills in both analysis and communication. Some of the career paths one can follow include political campaigns, government careers at local and national level, jo urnalism, business, law and international organizations.
Studying political science is not only useful for employment in government or local administration, but for life as well. Studying political science can deepen understanding and knowledge of the way the world works.
With this perspective, the Department of Political Science offers some undergraduate programmes.
Highlights
The first undergraduate programme of the department was started in 1932 in combination with Geography and History (GHP) with sanctioned annual intake of 30.
Every student of humanities, who aspires to succeed in civil services examinations, invariably likes to be associated with Rao's Study Circle. New Delhi We are very proud to say that the president of the study circle, Sri. S. Rao, was on the faculty of the department during the period 1956-60.
Upto 1970, the department of political science functioned jointly with the department of History.
In 1970, the Department of Political Science was created as full-fledged department.
In 1973, another undergraduate programme was started in combination with Economics and History (EHP) with sanctioned annual intake of 60.
The department has started a new market oriented restructured course from the academic year 2018-19, to cater to the job requirements of local industry and improve employability opportunities to students. The details of this restructured course is
B.A.(PEJMC) (Political Science, Special English, Journalism and Mass Communication) - English medium - 30 intake.
Further, the department has also started another market oriented restructured course from the academic year 2019-20, namely B.A. (JMCPPSY) Journalism and Mass Communication, Philosophy and Psychology in English Medium with a sanctioned intake of 30.
The Department has also introduced M.A. Political Science from the academic year 2019-20.
The department is also offering a certificate course on Journalism and Mass Communication to provide additional skills to students of various streams.
The department also undertakes coaching for civil services, groups and various other competitive examinations conducted by numerous recruitment agencies.
