The birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu, the harbinger of a new era and a social revolutionary, were held on a grand scale on Thursday under the auspices of the Telugu Department at the Government Arts College (Autonomous), Rajahmundry. The Principal of the college, Dr. Ramachandra R.K., attended as the chief guest and inaugurated the program by lighting the traditional lamp.
Chief Guest's Address:
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr. Ramachandra R.K. hailed Kandukuri as a great soul who enlightened a society steeped in ignorance. He stated that the social struggles spearheaded by him from Rajahmundry are unprecedented in the country's history. He called upon the students to draw inspiration from Kandukuri's tireless efforts, especially toward women's empowerment.
Messages from Guests of Honor:
Vice Principal Dr. D.V.S.N. Murthy remarked that carrying forward Kandukuri's ideals is the true tribute we can pay to him. The Head of the Telugu Department, Dr. Polumati Annavaram Satyanarayana, explained the literary excellence and significance of Kandukuri’s works.
Prominent Participants:
Heads of various departments and the faculty took an active part in the celebrations:
Heads of Departments: Mrs. Sheikh Jarina Begum (Sanskrit) highlighted Kandukuri's role in linguistic reforms. Dr. Usha Rani (Hindi) and Dr. Anjani Kumari (History) spoke about the responsibility of students in bringing about social change.
Faculty Members: Dr. B. Subbalakshmi, Dr. S. Priscilla, Dr. A. Venkateswarlu (Tulasi), Dr. P. Sivaji, Jagajeevan Ram, and Dr. K. Premakumari paid their respects.
During the event, students reminisced about the life history of Kandukuri and the social satires (Prahasanamulu) written by him. Non-teaching staff and a large number of students participated and made the program a success.
Organizer(s):
Department of Telugu
Outcome:
1.Cultural & Historical Awareness: By highlighting Kandukuri’s status as a "social revolutionary," the event successfully reinforced the historical significance of Rajahmundry as the epicenter of the Telugu Renaissance
2.Interdisciplinary Participation: The involvement of the Sanskrit, Hindi, and History departments demonstrated the multi-faceted impact of Kandukuri’s work—ranging from linguistic reform to social history.
3.Focus on Social Values: The speeches effectively translated historical efforts (like women's empowerment) into modern responsibilities for the current student body.
Feedback:
1. The speakers touched on students' responsibility for social change. To make this "actionable," the college could introduce a "Kandukuri Social Service Award" or a project where students identify a local social issue and propose a solution, keeping his spirit of reform alive.
2.The Head of the Telugu Department and the Sanskrit HOD provided insights into literary and linguistic reforms. Publishing a digital digest or a newsletter summarizing these speeches would serve as a valuable resource for students who couldn't attend.
