The Department of Botany was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest departments in the state of Andhra Pradesh. In its early years, the department offered PUC courses and later introduced undergraduate programmes. Over the past seven decades, many dedicated teachers have imparted value-based botanical knowledge, along with wisdom and practical skills, to students. From time to time, new programmes have been introduced to meet the evolving needs of students. The department offered undergraduate programmes such as B.Z.C., B.B.C., B.B.C. (Agro), B.Sc. (B.C. Horticulture), B.Sc. (B.C. Agriculture), and B.Voc. (Horticulture), based on local requirements as well as employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Graduates of the department have secured notable positions both in India and abroad. The M.Sc. (Botany) programme was introduced in 2009. From the academic year 2023–24, two undergraduate Honours programmes—B.Sc. (Botany Honours by Research) and B.Sc. (Organic Farming Honours)—have been introduced in accordance with NEP 2020. The department offers courses in both classical and modern branches of Botany, aiming to produce industry-ready graduates and entrepreneurs. It is equipped with well-maintained laboratories that help students develop practical skills. The faculty members employ a variety of pedagogical methods to ensure the overall development of students, in line with the college motto, “Student First.”
